Was the Universe Reionized by Massive Metal Free Stars?

چکیده

The WMAP satellite has measured a large optical depth to electron scattering after cosmological recombination of τes = 0.17 ± 0.04, implying significant reionization of the primordial gas only ∼ 200 million years after the big bang. However, the most recent overlap of intergalactic HII regions must have occurred at z . 9 based on the Lyα forest constraint on the thermal history of the intergalactic medium. Here we argue that a first generation of metal–free stars with a heavy (rather than Salpeter) mass function is therefore required to account for much of the inferred optical depth. This conclusion holds if feedback regulates star formation in early dwarf galaxies as observed in present-day dwarfs. Did Very Massive Stars Pre–enrich and Reionize the Universe?

Recent studies of heavy r–process elements in low [Fe/H] halo stars have suggested that an initial population of metal-free very massive stars (VMSs) may be required to provide early Fe enrichment without coproducing heavy r nuclei. We find similar abundance trends in α–elements (which should be copiously produced by VMSs), but not in other elements such as carbon (which should not), in agreeme...

Formation of Massive Primordial Stars in a Reionized Gas

We use cosmological hydrodynamic simulations with unprecedented resolution to study the formation of primordial stars in an ionized gas at high redshifts. Our approach includes all the relevant atomic and molecular physics to follow the thermal evolution of a prestellar gas cloud to very high densities of ∼ 10cm. We locate a star-forming gas cloud within a reionized region in our cosmological s...

Do We Need Stars to Reionize the Universe at High Redshifts? Early Reionization by Decaying Heavy Sterile Neutrinos

A remarkable result of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) observations is that the universe was significantly reionized at large redshifts. The standard explanation is that massive stars formed early and reionized the universe around redshift z ≈ 17. Here we explore an alternative possibility, in which the universe was reionized in two steps. An early boost of reionization is provi...

The Dawn of Galaxies ∗

The development of primordial inhomogeneities into the non-linear regime and the formation of the first astrophysical objects within dark matter halos mark the transition from a simple, neutral, cooling universe – described by just a few parameters – to a messy ionized one – the realm of radiative, hydrodynamic, and star formation processes. The recent measurement by the WMAP satellite of a lar...
